Camelia

Camellia is a genus of plants of Theaceae family, native to tropical areas \ 's Asia. The genus name, chosen by Linnaeus, Latinized name comes from the Jesuit missionary Georg Joseph Kamel (1661-1706), chemist and botanist, who first imported the plant from Japan.

The genus Camellia comprises plants shrub or small tree, evergreen, tall in the wild up to 15 m.
The simple leaves are alternate, dark green, more or less depending on the species, glossy and leathery, sometimes fleshy and have stipules and glands aromatic, with margins smooth or crenated, elliptical, lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate.
The flowers are single or double white, pink or red, no perfume or heavily scented, are plants adapted to temperate and humid climates.

The C. japonica is subtropical plant, and then love rainy summers and dry winters, but is hardy up to -15 ° C; fears the cold wind (the withers) and stagnation \ 'water (which rots the roots) , for the rest is suitable for any exposure. However, since the flowers, especially if clear and double, rot on the tree, the penumbra is ideal.

Grown in the ground, wants acid soil or at least neutral, not rich. Can be grown in pots with peat moss, and leaves and pine, chestnut or \ 'heather, repairing it in the greenhouse d \' winter. Rinvasata goes at least every two years. It multiplies by cuttings or by grafting of cuttings or seeds obtained from subjects.

Given the very slow growth of these plants, the pruning must always be cautious, unless we are given to start from scratch a plant too increased. Pruning training should be done immediately after flowering, new shoots from a choice of those who want to keep, leaving at least one gem. Pruning cleaning (dead or damaged branches, or in excess) can be done in any season. The English say that the camellia must remain open enough, so \ "to let a bird in flight \".
